Are cost savings without affecting health outcomes possible?
A 2018 UK study published in the Thorax examined an asthma cohort of 569,901 patients and 171,231 COPD patients to establish the impact of switching to cheaper inhaler therapies.1
They found that switching between MDIs and DPIs did not seemingly impact exacerbations, adverse medication events or respiratory events.1
In fact, they found that switching slightly reduced the risk of an exacerbation.1
Around 95% of the patients remained on their switched inhaler and adherence to the switched inhaler was significantly higher than adherence to the pre-switch equivalent inhaler.1
